2. Trial
A trial freezes the current signal package for one signal-response experiment.
3. What happened?
Record observation before meaning.
4. What might it mean?
No candidate meanings yet.
5. Evidence & Review
6. Research History & Export
Choose a session to view its audit chain.
AI-assisted research mode
AI Interpretation
AI can propose meanings and better tests. It cannot change raw observations or establish a meaning by itself.
Reasoning Task
UIT sends structured data needed for this task. It does not send API keys, WordPress profile data, or unrelated contacts.
AI Result
No AI analysis run yet.
Plain-language help
Help / User Guide
Start simple. Technical details are available when you need them.
Getting Started
UIT helps two agents build shared meaning without assuming they already share words.
Start in the Workbench. Choose meaning blocks, preview the structural signal, and play it on this device. Signal Builder explores signals. Communication Lab adds saved research records. AI Interpreter adds AI suggestions.
First steps
- Load the SELF → MOVE → TOWARD → OTHER example.
- Compare the semantic message with the carrier mapping.
- Play the signal. Use Step to inspect one pulse at a time.
- Open “Where UIT Can Be Used” to see current and future research uses.
UIT does not prove that any pattern is universally understood. Shared meaning must be tested.

Where UIT Can Be Used
UIT is not only for possible future contact. It can also help people study how meaning is built when two sides do not start with the same words.
Communication learning — Signal Builder
Build simple messages from action, timing, count, shape, and position. Example: show THREE with three objects and three pulses. UIT can help you test if the signal stays clear. It cannot prove that every mind will understand it.
People and AI, or AI and AI — Signal Builder / Communication Lab
Two agents can start with different symbols. They can use repeat tests to learn simple shared ideas. Saved trials show which links keep working.
Animal communication research — Communication Lab
Record signals and responses without assuming an animal uses human words. One matching response does not prove a meaning.
New AI systems — Communication Lab / AI Interpreter
Keep more than one possible meaning when a software agent uses unknown signals. AI may suggest the next test. It cannot prove that the other system is conscious.
SETI and first-contact research — Signal Builder or higher
Build tests that start with action, rhythm, shape, count, signal state, reference, and relation instead of shared speech. UIT can make the plan clear. It cannot show that an unknown receiver will understand it.
Unknown signal research — Communication Lab / AI Interpreter
Record an unusual signal first. Then keep several possible meanings and test them. An unusual signal alone is not proof of non-human intelligence.
Future verified non-human contact — AI Interpreter, if it occurs
If a real translation problem ever exists, UIT can combine learned ideas, evidence, and AI help to plan better tests. This does not prove that contact has happened.
Grounding Ladder
The ladder is a careful starting order, not a law. It moves through agency/action, rhythm, geometry, quantity, light or signal state, reference, relation, intent, and grammar.
A contact may skip a step or need another order. Record that rather than forcing the ladder.
Build a Signal
Choose meaning blocks first. Then see how UIT carries them through shape, movement, timing, light state, position, and optional sound.
The carrier can change while the intended link stays the same. Human color names and musical notes are not treated as meanings that every mind must share.
Record a Response
Write what happened before you decide what it means.
Good note: “Four pulses, then movement away.” Too early: “It said no.”
UIT stores the observation and the possible meaning in separate records. This lets later reviewers see the difference.
Evidence States
Unknown
No useful support yet.
Tentative
At least one test points toward the meaning.
Probable
Repeat tests support it, but doubt remains.
Grounded
The meaning keeps working when the test changes in planned ways. A human reviewer must approve it.
Confirmed
The meaning passes stronger repeat tests, including another session. A human reviewer must approve it.
These are UIT research states. They are not a percent chance that the meaning is true.
AI Interpretation
AI can suggest possible meanings, show where a response is unclear, and suggest the next useful test.
AI cannot change what was observed. It cannot create final evidence or approve Grounded or Confirmed meanings.
AI proposes meaning. Evidence establishes meaning.
If the AI service is down, AI Interpreter still works as a Communication Lab.
Privacy & Research Records
Saved lab data stays on this WordPress site unless an allowed user exports it or sends selected data to the AI service chosen by the site owner.
API keys stay on the server. Free-form notes are left out of AI requests unless you choose to include them.
Locked records are corrected with amendment records instead of quiet edits. Audit hashes and export checksums help reviewers track what changed.
Troubleshooting
Play is disabled
Choose at least one concept and wait for UIT to check the signal.
Lab controls are locked
The site may be set to Signal Builder, or your account may not have lab access.
AI is unavailable
AI may be turned off, the key may be missing, or the AI service may be down. The Communication Lab can still work.
A meaning did not become Grounded
Grounded needs enough tests, planned changes, no strong conflict, and human review. A high Evidence Score by itself is not enough.
Shared Lexicon
The Shared Lexicon keeps learned meanings for one contact.
A meaning can move through five research states as tests add support. UIT does not copy a learned meaning from one contact to another.
Competing Hypotheses
More than one meaning may fit the same response. UIT keeps those choices visible instead of forcing one answer too early.
Use later trials to support, weaken, or rule out each candidate meaning.
Experiment Recommendations
A good next test changes one important part while keeping other parts the same.
The AI Interpreter can suggest a test that helps separate two possible meanings. The suggestion is a research idea. It is not evidence.
Why Some Features Are Locked
UIT uses one interface for all three modes. Lower modes still show the tools that are available in higher modes so you can see the full workflow.
Locked tools are gray and cannot run. The Help / User Guide stays available.
Page shortcodes can request Signal Builder, Communication Lab, or AI Interpreter. The site administrator sets the highest mode the site may use.
Research Transparency
UIT saves what was seen, what it might mean, the evidence, human reviews, and AI ideas as separate records.
After a trial is locked, corrections use a new amendment record instead of changing the old record. Audit records and hashes help show what changed and when.
Exports
Signal Builder can export the exact signal data and a plain text summary.
Communication Lab and AI Interpreter can export a session ZIP. The ZIP can hold research records, checksums, reviews, changes, and history. AI runs are included only if the site owner turns that option on.
Communication Ladder
Quick Help: The ladder shows a careful order for building shared meaning. Start with simple actions and patterns before complex ideas.
Learn More: First test whether the other side changes its response when you change a signal. Later you can test numbers, shapes, actions, references, and questions.
Example: Change one pulse pattern and see whether the response changes too.
Technical Detail
The ladder is a working research guide, not a claim that every intelligence must learn in this order.
Concept Builder
Quick Help: Choose what you want the message to mean before you choose how it looks or sounds.
Learn More: SELF, MOVE, TOWARD, and OTHER are meaning blocks. UIT keeps meaning separate from the shapes, motion, light, or sound used to carry it.
Example: SELF + MOVE + TOWARD + OTHER can be shown with two circles and inward movement.
Technical Detail
Semantic concepts are typed by category and stored separately from carrier mappings.
Signal Preview
Quick Help: Preview shows the exact pattern UIT will play on this device.
Learn More: The preview keeps the meaning and the signal carrier side by side so you can see what changed.
Example: THREE may use three pulses while TOWARD uses an arrow or inward motion.
Technical Detail
Playback is local only in plugin 1.1.1. UIT does not control external transmitters.
Response Observation
Quick Help: Record what happened before you decide what it means.
Learn More: Write what you saw, such as three flashes and movement away. Add the possible meaning later in a separate section.
Example: Observation: four pulses. Interpretation: maybe FOUR.
Technical Detail
Raw observation and annotation are separate research objects.
Evidence Score
Quick Help: The Evidence Score compares support and contradiction for a possible meaning. It is not the percent chance that the meaning is true.
Learn More: Good repeated tests can raise the score. Strong contradictions can lower it or block a stronger status.
Example: If different object counts keep producing matching pulse counts, the quantity idea gains support.
Technical Detail
The default score is a smoothed weighted evidence ratio using versioned quality weights.
Grounded
Quick Help: A grounded meaning has worked in several planned tests. A reviewer has approved it as a working shared meaning.
Learn More: Grounded does not mean proven forever. New evidence can still weaken it.
Example: If 2, 3, 4, and 5 objects repeatedly lead to matching pulse counts, quantity may become grounded.
Technical Detail
Grounded requires minimum trials, controlled variations, evidence thresholds, no blocking contradiction, and human review.
Confirmed
Quick Help: A confirmed meaning has passed more tests and at least one repeat session. A reviewer has approved the stronger status.
Learn More: Confirmed is UIT's strongest research state. It still applies only to this contact and the evidence collected here.
Example: A mapping repeats across two sessions and continues to work under planned changes.
Technical Detail
Confirmed is an operational research status, not a universal truth claim.
Candidate Interpretation
Quick Help: A candidate interpretation is one possible meaning. It is a guess to test, not an answer to accept.
Learn More: UIT keeps more than one possible meaning when the evidence is not clear.
Example: Four pulses might mean FOUR, YES, or REPEAT. A new test should separate those options.
Technical Detail
Candidate hypotheses retain source provenance and evidence links.
AI Interpretation
Quick Help: AI can suggest possible meanings and useful next tests. AI cannot decide that a meaning is grounded or confirmed.
Learn More: AI can notice patterns, but it can also be wrong. UIT keeps AI ideas separate from evidence.
Example: AI may suggest three meanings for four pulses and recommend changing only the object count next.
Technical Detail
AI output must pass a task schema and cannot mutate raw observations or authoritative evidence.
Grounding Guard
Quick Help: Grounding Guard warns you when a message uses ideas that have not been learned yet for this contact.
Learn More: A complex question may fail if the contact has not learned its smaller building blocks.
Example: If ORIGIN is not grounded, a question about a home world may be too complex.
Technical Detail
Admin policy can be Off, Warn, or Require Grounded.
Locked Feature
Quick Help: This feature is part of UIT, but it is not active in the current deployment.
Learn More: You can still read the help to understand what the feature does. An administrator can change the deployment level.
Example: AI Interpretation is visible in Signal Builder and Communication Lab but needs AI Interpreter to run.
Technical Detail
Locked controls are disabled in both the UI and server routes.
Where UIT Can Be Used
Quick Help: UIT is not only for possible future contact. It can also help study how people, animals, and AI build shared meaning without the same starting language.
Learn More: UIT can be used for lessons, AI tests, animal research, signal studies, SETI planning, and future contact research. Each use still needs its own tests.
Example: Two AI agents can start with different symbols and test whether they can learn the same simple meanings.
Technical Detail
Being able to represent a use case does not prove that the communication model is validated for that domain.
Page Shortcodes
Quick Help: Each page shortcode selects a plain-language mode. The site administrator still sets the highest mode that can run.
Learn More: Use [uit_sb] for Signal Builder, [uit_cl] for Communication Lab, and [uit_ai] for AI Interpreter. Use [uit] when you want the page to follow the administrator maximum. The short codes are page controls; users see the plain-language mode names.
Example: If the site maximum is Communication Lab, [uit_ai] still shows the full interface, but AI controls stay locked.
Technical Detail
Shortcodes select presentation level. WordPress capabilities and the administrator maximum remain the authorization boundary.
