Asymptotic Flow Cosmology (AFC)

A New Way to Think About How the Universe Ends

Cosmological discussions of the Universe’s ultimate fate commonly include the Big Crunch, Big Rip, Big Freeze or heat death, asymptotic Minkowski dilution, and cyclic or bouncing scenarios. This paper proposes a different end-state class: Asymptotic Flow Cosmology (AFC).

AFC hypothesizes that the Universe can approach a macroscopically stationary geometry without approaching thermodynamic equilibrium. In the proposed endpoint,\[ 0<H_\infty<\infty,\qquad \dot H\rightarrow0, \]

while a physical energy or particle-transfer current remains nonzero and continues to generate entropy. The defining distinction is therefore not a nonzero temperature—which can also occur in de Sitter spacetime—but persistent irreversible throughput at zero net macroscopic change.

A minimal realization is constructed using open-system cosmological thermodynamics. For a barotropic component with particle-creation rate \(\Gamma\), the particle balance and effective creation pressure lead to\[ \dot H= -\frac{3}{2}(1+w)H^2 \left(1-\frac{\Gamma}{3H}\right). \]

The AFC fixed point occurs when\[ \Gamma_\infty=3H_\infty. \]

At this limit, the Hubble rate, density, and particle number density can remain finite and stationary while particle creation continues at a nonzero rate.

A minimal phenomenological closure,\[ \frac{\Gamma}{3H} = \left(\frac{H_\infty}{H}\right)^m, \qquad m>0, \]

produces a stable attractor and yields an analytic expansion history. For pressureless matter and \(m=2\), the resulting background expansion has the same functional form as spatially flat ΛCDM, demonstrating that identical expansion histories need not imply identical thermodynamic futures.

The paper further analyzes a future de Sitter causal patch. At the AFC endpoint, continuing particle production inside the horizon can be exactly balanced by outward transport across the horizon. The number of particles and stored entropy inside the patch may therefore remain constant even while internal entropy generation and entropy export remain individually nonzero. AFC consequently describes a non-equilibrium steady state, rather than conventional heat death.

AFC does not identify the microscopic origin of the required throughput. Gravitational particle production, vacuum conversion, curvature-matter exchange, dark-sector interactions, or presently unknown physics remain possible candidate mechanisms. Particle creation itself is not claimed as novel; it is used as an existence construction demonstrating that the proposed endpoint can be represented mathematically.

The hypothesis is falsifiable. AFC fails if the asymptotic flow necessarily vanishes, if the steady-flow fixed point is unstable or thermodynamically inconsistent, if a microscopic completion cannot conserve total stress-energy, or if observations eliminate all viable trajectories capable of reaching the endpoint.

No empirical detection of AFC is claimed. The contribution is a mathematically explicit and testable proposal for a cosmic future that is asymptotically stationary, but not asymptotically dead.
